It is with immense sorrow that we share the heartbreaking passing of James Owens, a 19-year-old student and beloved member of the Huntingdon College community, who tragically lost his life in a car accident on November 10, 2025, while returning to campus. James, a native of Tuscaloosa, Alabama, was a bright young man whose strength, kindness, and faith left a lasting impression on all who knew him.
James was a dedicated defensive lineman for the Huntingdon Hawks football team, where he was admired not only for his athletic ability but also for his leadership, humility, and character. Teammates, coaches, and classmates describe him as a “towering presence of kindness” — someone who led by example, encouraged others, and carried himself with respect and compassion both on and off the field. His determination, discipline, and unwavering commitment to improvement inspired those around him to strive for their best.
Beyond his achievements in athletics, James embodied what it meant to live with purpose and faith. Just a few weeks before his passing, he was baptized by the college chaplain on the field where he played — surrounded by his teammates and friends.
